Peter Obi’s achievements as the governor of Anambra state, amidst attempts to tarnish his image. The accomplishments include:
1. Anambra was the first state to initiate sub-sovereign wealth savings, a pioneering effort in Sub-Saharan Africa.
2. The Nigerian Debt Management Office rated Anambra as the least indebted state in Nigeria, with the state completing various projects without borrowing or raising bonds under his leadership.
3. The Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria recognized Anambra State as the most financially stable state in the country.
4. The state formed strategic partnerships with churches in the health sector, leading to the transformation of several hospitals, including Iyienu Hospital, Ogidi; Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Ihiala; St. Charles Borromeo Hospital, Onitsha; Holy Rosary Hospital, Waterside, Onitsha; and St. Joseph Hospital, Adazi-Nnukwu.
5. The Joseph Nwilo Heart Centre was established in St. Joseph, Adazi-Nnukwu, enabling heart operations to be performed locally.
6. The state won the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation award of $1 million for outstanding performance in immunization in the South-East.
7. Over 30,000 computers were procured and distributed to secondary schools, including 22,500 from HP.
8. Microsoft Academies were provided to more than 500 secondary schools, along with internet access.
9. The state government distributed over 700 buses to secondary schools.
10. Boreholes were drilled in schools statewide, and numerous classrooms were constructed in all 177 communities.
11. Efforts to boost the state’s economy led to the attraction of several companies, including SABMiller, the second-largest brewery globally.
12. Security vehicles were provided to each of the 177 communities, as well as markets and churches.
13. The Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu Teaching Hospital, Awka, was built from scratch as the state’s first teaching hospital.
14. The World Bank supported the state’s erosion control efforts through the National Erosion and Watershed Management Project.
15. The state conducted poverty mapping, a first in Nigeria, to guide poverty alleviation strategies.
16. Aerial mapping of Awka and structural plans for Awka Capital Territory, Onitsha, and Nnewi were undertaken for the first time.
17. A secretariat complex was built to house state government ministries.
18. By the end of his tenure in 2014, twelve health institutions, including two hospitals, secured accreditation, up from none in 2006.
19. Under Peter Obi’s leadership, Anambra students improved from 26th to 1st position in WAEC exams, demonstrating significant educational progress.
20. The poverty rate decreased to 11% under Peter Obi, making Anambra the third-best performing state in Nigeria.
